The Palestine Ambassador, Suhail Hani Daher Akel, is going to give a dissertation in Monte Caseros today. He has been invited by the Centro Cultural y de Capacitacion Permanente of Club de Regatas Casereño (CCCP) and the Municipality of that Southern City in the province.

Within the context of such a prominent visit, organizers has established a program of activities. It is going to start during the morning.

An act is going to take place at Colon Square at 11:30. The Palestinian diplomat, provincial and local authorities, representatives from civil, school and ecclesiastic institutions and representatives from the community in general are going to attend the act.

Later on, Mayor Eduardo Omar Cornalo is going to be in charge of officially giving a warm welcome to Daher Akel. He is going to say some words before the representative of the Palestine National Authority in Argentina.

A national tree

Within that same framework, the plantation of an Olive Tree for Peace is going to take place at the same square (the main square in Monte Caseros) at 12:00, following a habit of the Ambassador, who has headed similar acts in several cities throughout the country.

The olive tree (a Palestinian national tree) is going to be blessed by Goya Bishop, Ricardo Faifer. A plaque is also going to be unveiled in that place.

The press

The organizers arranged for Daher Akel to have contact with the national and international means of communications, which are going to attend the event.

That is going to take place at the Municipal Hall at 15:00, where the Palestinian Ambassador is going to give a press conference.

Conference

Suhail Hani Daher Akel’s dissertation on Palestine is going to take place at CCCP, located in Costanera Avenue 595 at 20:00. According to organizers, there will be a great amount of people due to the quality of the speaker and the approaching of current issues related to the international reality from the point of view of the representative of the Palestine National Authority in this country. The Ambassador regards our country as a “friend”. It is important to mention that the Palestinian Ambassador is going to stay in the region until tomorrow.

Why an olive tree is planted

Olive and orange trees are the Palestinian national trees. The olive tree is a noble tree with an everlasting life and it reproduces itself. In Jerusalem, Palestine, there are still olive trees from Jesus Christ’s times (they say that he was the first Palestinian martyr).

Many Olive Trees for Peace have been planted by Suhail Hani Daher Akel.

The Olive tree is an important element in the Palestinian life and its olive oil is one of the keys of its economy. Its wood is perfect for the Palestinian art of carving. These works – apart from their beauty - keep the pleasant smell of the trees’ fruits

Olive trees represent over 48% of the cultivated area in Northern Palestine (West Bank) and Gaza Strip and they represent almost 70% of fruit trees.

Since the occupation of Palestine and its capital city Jerusalem in 1948 (West) and 1967 (East), over one and a half million of Palestinian olive and fruit trees have been pulled up in order to erase the Palestinian essence on its land. It constitutes an economic and environmental disaster, which is going to have a serious impact on the society for many generations, which still live under the Israeli occupation up to now.

In Argentina

The plantation of an Olive Tree for Peace is carried out by Suhail Hani Daher Akel, who has been the Palestine Ambassador since 1993; just a few days before the signing of the Oslo agreement –September 13 of 1993, in Washington-, where the martyr President Yasser Arafat declared “The Peace of the Braves”.

As a consequence, the Olive Trees for Peace planted in Argentina are an example of the culture of life and freedom.

Then Olive Trees have been planted in cities such as San Salvador de Jujuy, Perico (Jujuy), Lincoln (Buenos Aires), Los Surgentes (Córdoba), Deán Funes (Córdoba), Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires), Comodoro Rivadavia (Chubut), Escobar (Buenos Aires), Bell Ville (Córdoba), Villa María (Córdoba), Villa Nueva (Córdoba), José Ingenieros (Buenos Aires), Chascomús (Buenos Aires), Dolores (Buenos Aires), Ituzaingó (Buenos Aires), Rosario (Santa Fe), Campana (Buenos Aires) y Córdoba City.

On November 15 of 1999, the Ambassador planted an Olive Tree for Peace in Palestine and its Capital City Jerusalem, in the garden of the first Palestine Embassy in Argentina during its inauguration.

He has also planted Olive Trees for Peace in Federal Capital, San Luis City, Vaqueros (Salta), Salta City, Mendoza City, Gualeguaychú (Entre Ríos), Santiago del Estero City, San Miguel de Tucumán, Azul (Buenos Aires), La Plata (Buenos Aires), Río Cuarto (Córdoba), Santa Fe City, Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires), Paraná (Entre Ríos) y Berisso (Buenos Aires).
